Truth or Lie:
A classic activity for the EFL Classroom

This activity has so many variations that it is hard to to pick just one.   And, it is adaptable to all levels.

I like to use it as a warm-up for new classes.  It works best with intermediate to advanced students who have pretty good interviewing skills.  They interview each other with the intention that they will later introduce their partner to the whole class.  Each interviewer should ask the interviewee for at least two or three things that are "unusual" or special about their life experience and write them down.  One of the experiences should be a lie.

Later, each student should introduce their partner - and tell the class the two or three "unusual" experiences.  The class then votes on which one of the experiences is a lie.  This can be quite a fun activity and loosens up the class quite a bit when voting and being surprised about each other's experiences.

Students in some cultures - where they are uncomfortable or not experienced with the idea of telling a "whopper" - might need some help from the instructor.  Often only a small twist on a real life experience can turn it into a lie.

A more structured version of this activity, suitable for most skill levels can be found here: Truth or Lie.

And, here's another version from Dave's ESL Cookbook.

Enjoy!
